We live in Cairns, which is only a 5.5-hour drive away from Townsville. We use the town for quick get aways and shopping not available in Cairns.
Plenty of good places to eat with lots of variety from drive through to quality restaurants.
Getting around is pretty easy if you have Google maps or similar. It's very spread out and there seems to be multiple ways to get to some destinations.

Loved the area with friendly people everywhere.
Loved the area with friendly people everywhere. Went to the Museum which my Great nephew really loved. All hands on. Went to Kirwan Bowling and had a great time with all our extended family.
Also went to the Tavern and had a wonderful meal which didn't cost too much.
Spent time on The Strand at the Waterpark and all the kids had a ball splashing around.

It is a nice city surrounded by some rainforest, farmland and bush. Lots to see and do. I loved the museums. I loved the botanical gardens; the hill overlooking Townsville is five minutes drive away from the hotel and you can drive or walk up it. The esplanade is worth the walk. Lots of places eat and drink along it.

Townsville is a relaxed, growing city with good restaurants in Palmer Street and along the Strand. Easy to get around and always peaceful on the water front. Magnetic Island is a quick ferry ride away.

Hotel was in good location for the activities we came to Townsville to do. Handy havig a good food/beverage area close by in City Lane and very handy to a good chemist and Woolworths. Bus and taxi services were nearby and not too expensive to get a taxi to and from the airport. Easy walk to The Strand precinct and easy to spend a day wandering and reading the history as well as enjoying the views and great eateries along the way.
We were in Townsville for a week and was looking for somewhere central and comfortable. Location is great. But the room hasn’t had anything done since is was built. TV is 32 inch, the beds are hard as and all you feel is the springs. The kitchen cutlery was missing somethings and the microwave was missing a turn table. The whole room just felt really rundown and one cares how it is presented
The staff were absolutely amazing. We travel alot for work and pleasure and have stayed in 5 star hotels where service has been sub-par but the staff at Mercure Townsville are by far the best. We will definitely be back just for that reason, keep up the good work guys. From the front of house to the bar and restaurant, every staff member we dealt with was accommodating and helpful
have stayed numerous times now and love the place. the value for money is great. you are in the quieter end of Palmer street so no noise but a few minute walk to all the cafes, pubs and restaurants. a 10 minute walk and you are on the Strand. and a two minute drive to the Magnetic Island car ferry. We love it.
Possibly the best feature of the hotel is the sea view particularly from the higher floors as well as its location on the Strand giving easy walking access to restaurants etc. This was our second stay (from some years back) and the room may have been well renovated since then. Very acceptable.
Fantastic location on The Strand looking out towards Magnetic Island . Kitchenette was handy , bed was super comfy , spacious modern bathroom, daily servicing great and easy walking distance to lots of bars / restaurants
Very close to all the Restuarant on the strand a good spot very central and walking distant yo pubs snd cafe .
Very clean and is comfortable bed and room has kitchenette if you want to do your meals
This place is very clean and comfortable. Great value for money. Located very centrally on Palmer street, close to a variety of pubs and restaurants, as well as being not far from the Strand.
The hotel room was comfortable and clean. The facilities worked very well and it was nice having a washer/dryer in the bathroom.
Close to restaurants and amenities.
The food, value for money and pool location.
