Wiveliscombe is a delightful historic village with a supermarket, two pubs, post office, delicatessen, gift shops, a chocolate shop and a great café. Both pubs serve good food.
We were there to walk the West Dean Way which winds 70km through the Somerset country side. We used the local bus service to get to and from the start and finish points on our walk. This worked well for us and meant we didn't have to worry about a car.

Wiveliscombe Is a small town but very typical of the location close to Taunton where there are plenty of shops or if you prefer close enoughto reach the coast with Minehead a short journey away. Plernty of food outlets Co-op, The wivy Larder Deli full of choice beers and chutneys etc and some good cafe's. and excellent pubs, The Bear, The White Hart so no excuse for getting bad food or drink in this town
The hotel is right in the centre of Wiveliscombe - opposite the Square and easily accessible by public transport - the Number 25 from Taunton (via the train station to Dulverton/Langley First Bus Somerset Bristol. The room was comfortable and had tea and coffee facilities and was spacious and I was on the top floor overlooking the road - no noise herd from the street or pub - good food for the evenings - I was in Room 11 a double bedded room for 2 people
Staff were all very friendly and welcoming, the room was very clean, spacious and comfortable with an added bonus of the shower being high enough for a 6’4” person to shower comfortably!!
The food available on the evening was absolutely delicious and anything we needed was quickly sorted, check in and out was easy and fast and the pub attached allowed dogs :) even though there was no breakfast at the hotel they recommended a lovely cafe just opposite.
The staff at the White Hart were really accommodating, friendly, charming, and helpful. They found us taxi numbers and let us book taxis using their phone (as the signal is a bit patchy in Wiveliscombe). Our rooms were a good size, very clean and very comfortable and we weren’t bustled out of the doors super-early on the morning of leaving or anything. There is a good car park and everything worked well for us - we had a very good stay.
We have family in Wiveliscombe so stay at the White Hart regularly. I understand that it is now under new management and it has definitely improved as a result. The public areas have been redecorated & now look much fresher. Our room was compact, but a reasonable size, and whilst the decor is ready for an update, the bed was really comfy and the shower was good. Offering breakfast (continental) is also a great improvement.
Excellent hotel, nice friendly staff. Really good food in the restaurant. Timed it perfectly with an excellent blues band for the evening which was a nice bonus!
