Stayed at the Crown Hotel when travelling to the area to compete in a national time trial (cycle racing). The hotel was great, and had a good range of facilities available for guests. We particularly enjoyed having access to the swimming pool and sauna, which after a long day driving up the country was the perfect race preparation. The room was clean, tidy and well presented. We dined in the Walton's Bar, which has a good range of food available, and not too expensive. The hotel was reasonably quiet and we got a good night's sleep! The village is picturesque, and there is a nice walk down the riverside (where you can see the castle and landing across the river).

The location was set in the beautiful countryside with the sheep and lambs in reaching distance. Before arrival I had a special request because of allergies, The Plough were so accommodating with this. Checked in late evening and the staff offered to take our bags to our room whilst we ate and unwound from our very long journey. The food was delicious and the portions are a good size. The whole establishment was clean and well decorated despite ongoing some eternal improvements to the beer garden. I would highly recommend this little gem. The only thing I would say perhaps to add a children’s menu as not all children are big eaters and my nephew wasted the majority of the adults meal which was over £20 so expensive when they don’t eat large portions. We would definitely return in the future.

The breakfast was great with plenty of choice including coffee from a coffee maker, all that you could wish for a continental breakfast. The bedroom and bed were very comfortable and roomy. Particularly liked the little separate seating area with TV and fridge etc, also the outside space with table and chairs.
A very comfortable stay, with a very warm and friendly welcome.

It is a really good area to stay as it is close to so many attractions. On the River Eden with beautiful walks and views. Excellent places to eat in Armathwaite and nearby. (highly recommend Fox and Pheasant). You need your own transport to get around. We have not found anything to avoid in the 4 years we have been coming here and come at least twice yearly.

There is so much to explore in the area as it is close to Scottish border and 'The Lakes'. There is something to see and somewhere to go in every direction.
I ate at several local places. The Fox and Pheasant do really good meals/snacks and I had a lovely Sunday Lunch with relations at 'The Heather Glen country house'.
You really need to have your own transport for this area to be able to explore.
I don't think I have found anything to avoid yet in 4 years of coming here.

Great base for exploring the Lakes.
Great base for exploring the Lakes. Armathwaite is very scenic and a good walking area. Also situated on the Settle to Carlisle railway.
We had all of our meals at the Fox and Pheasant. The food was excellent. We did call for a coffee at the other pub in the village, The Dukes Head, this was also very nice and friendly.

We enjoyed the simplicity and effortless hospitality of our hosts. After we enquired about local walks one member of the team came back to us with a hand written guide to take us through the local woodland and beauty spots and described a whole variety of other short walks that we might enjoy.
