We loved this place. Its setting among the meadows well away from the road is lovely. It’s a beautiful building and is well kept with lots of character inside. The staff were delightful and created a wonderfully casual atmosphere. It’s very good value for money.
This family-run, 5-bedroom traditional pub overlooks the River South Tyne. It has traditional cider and cask ales, homemade bar meals and welcoming, friendly staff.

So we ate evening meals and breakfast and both were well cooked with good ingredients and well and very nutritious.
The pub is in an old market town and reflects its position in the town.

Breakfast was excellent. What was quite remarkable was the service given by the owner by transporting us to & from the hotel to our venue. Nothing was too much trouble. It’s a unique building & it is necessary to take that into account. Not quite the conventional hotel. Great company & great fun.i

This is a lovely hotel, beautifully upkept in original character but there is no sense of over formality. The evening meal was lovely but we’d recommend having sides of potatoes, veg etc if you are at all hungry!

Lovely tranquil location, nice not to have to worry about extra locking onto my motorcycle overnight, Lana and Phil sorted an evening meal at very short notice.
Breakfast in the morning was really very well cooked and nothing was skimped at all with the facilities, bathroom , TV etc.

Our party were very very happy with our stay at the Centre of Britain hotel - from the amazing and different rooms to the breakfast and the evening meals we had - we would all stay again - David is a wonderful host.
A beautiful and tranquil small town with awesome countryside...
A beautiful and tranquil small town with awesome countryside and beautiful walks. Unfortunately, many local businesses have closed but there is a great take-away shop (Jack's) and a fantastic pub (The Cumberland Inn). The locals are fighting back and I wish them well with their Enterprise Town. If you are looking to get away and experience some beautiful solitude this is a great place to visit - just be careful and don't choose the accommodation I did (see my review). There are lots of hills, even in the town, and the pavements can be tricky. It's a long way from Melbourne, Australia but I hope to be back one day. I hear that there's a steam train that runs in the summer and I would love to experience it.

When 2 grandparents are travelling with a teenage grandson,...
When 2 grandparents are travelling with a teenage grandson, it’s not easy to find a place that it warm and inviting and meets all our needs. Lovelady Shield House Hotel was perfect! The online ratings for this property were out of date - it was perfect in every way. The rooms were lavish and beautifully presented with the best quality fittings and fixtures. This property has been recently upgraded and restored sympathetically with its history. The staff were so warm and friendly and made us feel at home. The breakfast was amazing and although they are not currently serving dinner the pub just a mile down the road was brilliant. Located near the geographic centre of the UK there is so much to see nearby with Hadrians Wall Romans Forts and much more. We loved this property and cannot praise it highly enough 10/10.

A beautiful town with some lovely pubs and restaurants.
A beautiful town with some lovely pubs and restaurants. Cumberland arms was our favourite with nice food and amazing views on the beer garden /large balcony outside. Very quiet, chatty, friendly staff at the pubs but not a lively late night nightlife. We went for peace and quiet which is exactly what we got. Some. Beautiful walks with Ashgill waterfall a few minutes drive. Most impressive waterfall in seen in the UK! We got to stand behind it and touch it which I've only done at niagara! Will definitely be returning here

9 out of 10 from me!
The location is perfect in my eyes.
9 out of 10 from me!
The location is perfect in my eyes. Set in beautiful scenery, it's quiet yet the walk to Alston town centre is only 5-10 minutes.
The guest house itself is beautiful. There is a lovely lounge, a quaint and vintage hallway, a lovely area for eating and of course the lovely bedrooms that are on offer. Everything has character and I even got to play on the piano they have in the hallway!
The food, absolutely stunning 10 out of 10. Breakfast is what me and mum had, so generous in terms of quality and qunatity. You also get to choose what you want and what you don't want. It was one of the best breakfasts I've had.
Bedroom. We had the twin bed bedroom, Room 1. Absolutely love the layout, the quaint feeling inside and the bathroom and showed worked absolutely fine with minimal issues (slightly stiff to get going but fine once going!)
My only negative...and it is a minor thing... It could have been a tad warmer, but then we went at a very cold spell and we were the only ones in the manor house at the time. There was heating, and a generous amount coming out from the radiator at the cold times of day. My advice to others would be to bring some extra layers in patticularly cold seasons when its below freezing!

Beautiful little village with such charming shops and houses...
Beautiful little village with such charming shops and houses. A very close knit community and also friendly. The houses/dwellings are full of history and are kept so clean.
They have local pubs The Turks Head, which we visited, they have a gorgeous cider called Friels, refreshing on a hot day. They were so kind, as they provided a bowl of water for our 2 little dogs! A local co-op, post office, chippy and kebab house Tonys, we had food from there last night, the pizza and Donner kebab was to die for! Definitely 5 star! The church in the town is the main feature and soaked in history. You can walk to any of these facilities. We found a river side walk out dogs loved it, we spotted a beautiful Shire horse and Shetland pony just grazing in a huge field, the weather was perfect, it has been a delightful break away from busy Blackpool.
This is a really lovely cottage in a beautiful part of the North Pennines. It's spotless, very comfortable and has great views from the main bedroom. The kitchen is well equipped for self catering. If you can't be bothered cooking there's a great cafe 2 mins away for breakfast and several places in Alston for dinner. We stayed during unseasonably hot weather in September so didn't get to enjoy the wood burning stove - we'll save that for next time! This truly is a little gem.
The Inn owners are new so don't be swayed by historic negative reviews.
We stayed at The Angel Inn whilst walking the South Tyne Trail, not only was it a fabulous location within easy reach of the trail but the hosts were second to none too. They even dried our clothes and boots after we got caught in a heavy shower.
Vegetarians catered for at breakfast.
The hotel was a great location for those doing the pennine way too.
Exceptional value for money
Very lovely cottage on a farm. Excellent accommodations for our family with 3 comfy bedrooms and 3 bathrooms! Modern kitchen and comfy living room with wood stove. Wonderful place to come back to after day of exploring N. Pennines or Hadrians Wall. 1 mile from small village of Alston with gas station and pubs. The Cumberland is a wonderful local pub. The Cottage is the best place we’ve stayed on our 2 week UK tour!
Spacious, comfortable accommodation. Very well equipped. Had everything we needed. Property listing says no wi-fi access but it was there and very good! Perfect base for 3 days walking on the Pennine Way with a day left over for a "normal" holiday. We parked our car at the end of each day's walk and Alston Taxis took us back to the start. The softies' way to do a tough stretch of the trail!
The bedroom was comfortable, spacious and characterful. Staff were very friendly welcoming and helpful. Both Dinner and breakfast were lovely The little town of Alston is gorgeous and the surrounding countryside and villages were a delight for motorbike riding cycling and walkers what a beautiful part of the world we have discovered. We will definitely be back to this special hotel
Oh this is a jewel in a tiny town! Clean is an understatement! Absolutely everything under one roof. The decor is second to none! A little difficult to find, but with helpful residents of Alston, we managed. The lovely Claire (caretaker) looked after any of our needs. Thank you! Relaxing accommodation, you bet.. Sylvia and Peter you should be proud?!!
Central location to Alston was useful, providing access to local coop and if needed 3 pubs a stone throw away. Enjoyed visiting the local Art Exhibition that was taking place in the church. Accommodation was snug but provided what was needed in terms of comfort and facilities. Never stayed anyway with such good water pressure!
This studio apartment had everything we required for our short break. It was very clean and well appointed in a lovely central location in the town. On street parking was readily available nearby. Local convenience store was nearby and pub / restuarant a short walk away
Jane was a responsive and helpful host; good communication. Requested yogurt for breakfast, and she provided it. Large space with sofa and table. Good bathroom. Excellent location for those walking the Pennine Way. Alston is a lovely village, too.
We were booked in at short notice so we probably had the last room. The food was lovely both in the evening and at breakfast. The inn had its own parking as well. We would be very happy to stay here again should we stop over in Alston
Friendly host and interesting location. Breakfast was hot and nicely cooked. Despite appearances the bed was very comfortable and clean. Alston is a very interesting town to visit with friendly locals and great countryside.
Nice central location near to shops, pubs etc. Nice and clean and stocked with everything you need. Good heating system and log fire if you need it. Bed was comfortable and hot water bottles a nice touch.
No Breakfast. Location was rural and centrally located for the area around Hadrian's Wall, Lake District, etc. that we wanted to tour. Two adequate grocery stores and several restaurants nearby.
staff were very friendly and helpful. we have paid a lot more for a lot less! the bed was the comfiest I’ve slept in at a hotel, the food was amazing and the menu was diverse A****
The hotel is on the edge of a gorgeous little village with access to the Pennine way footpath close by.
The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was spectacular!
Alston town centre is within walking distance although the range of shops etc is limited. Plenty places to visit if you're happy to drive and some nice local walks.
